Karachi Circular Railway anti-encroachment operation begins
Heavy contingents of police are accompanying the railways administration and the city administration as they began the operation in Liaquatabad, Gharibabad and furniture market. The operation has not started in Gulberg.
Joint Director of Land and Railway Imtiaz Siddiqui had said earlier in the day that the operation would be launched in the furniture market in Karachis Gharibabad area.
The operation was to begin yesterday, but had been delayed by a day so that people occupying KCR land had time to vacate their shops and homes, Joint Director of Land and Railway Imtiaz Siddiqui had said.
"We dont want anyone to suffer any losses," Siddiqui had said, adding that some 1,200 encroachments are intact on the land earmarked for the defunct metro rail system.
"Encroachment is not a poor person looking to save some petty cash. It is a complex network involving government institutions, in an official or unofficial capacity, seeking to reap the rewards of quick land dispensation with none of the risks attached," Saleem said.

KMC to put up 254 huts at Karachi's Hawke's Bay beach for auction
The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) plans to auction 254 of its huts at the Hawke's Bay Beach to increase its revenue.
Commissioner Karachi Iftikhar Ali Shallwani cancelled on Monday the allotment of all the corporation’s huts at the beach. The land department was instructed to take control of the huts.
Notices were issued to the allottees and the KMC says it will take action against defaulters.
The Karachi administrator said the corporation had allotted 254 huts for three years. The auction of these huts will be according to their market value, he said.
The huts are being reclaimed by the KMC to increase revenue and provide better civic facilities, says Shallwani. The process of allotment and rent is to be made transparent.
Huts at Hawke's Bay are a source of entertainment for the public and it is KMC's responsibility to provide facilities, he said.
